USNA Band performs with UMD Wind Ensemble

Last week our concert band performed with the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in College Park, MD.

The first half of the program featured UMD's Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. L. Richmond Sparks. They performed works by Karl Husa, J.S. Bach, and Frank Tichieli. Trumpet professor Chris Gekker joined the ensemble for Ernst Sachse's Concertino in E-flat, and saxophone professor Chris Vadala performed The Feel of a Vision by Chuck Mangione.

After intermission, the USNA Band and LCDR Steve Trzcinski took the stage, opening with Country Band March by Charles Ives. Then the principal players from UMD Wind Ensemble sat in with us as we performed one of the great classic works for winds, Symphony for Band by Paul Hindemith. Next up was a tribute to our veterans, with Armed Forces on Parade, arranged by MU1 Ben Bokor, and then the entire UMD Wind Ensemble joined us on stage for a truly grand finale, Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

We really enjoyed this collaboration with the University of Maryland. Their beautiful hall, warm hospitality, and enthusiastic students were a real treat for us. We hope to expand on this great partnership in the future!
